I was walking through Red Hook, a waterfront neighborhood in Brooklyn that we have visited in earlier articles, on March 19, 2025. March 19 was the eve of the vernal equinox. As it would turn out, spring’s eve was quite a bit more vernal than the first couple of days of springtide proper. Having previously composed a spring reader, I thought it would be fitting and proper to welcome the season with a seasonal photo.

Photo taken from one side of Coffey Street in Red Hook of the other. In the immediate foreground, we see the roof of a black car with brick buildings across the street reflecting off it. In the middle, there is a cobblestone street. Across the street, we see three red brick row-houses and a black brick house on the far right. In the center, across the street, is a tree just budding with pink buds.

I took the following photo on Coffey Street between Ferris and Concover Streets. I focused on GrapheneOS-powered Google Pixel 6a phone camera on a tree sitting right between 182 and 180 Coffey Street. If you squint, you can see little pink buds on the leafless tree branches. This tree, like several other brave pioneers, was not waiting for the formal announcement of spring to begin flowering. I fully expect to see it leafing in May.

Spring news aside, Coffey Street is an appealing block. You can see the cobblestone street which may remind readers of a scenic block I shared from Vinegar Hill (another Brooklyn waterfront neighborhood that is a good long walk from Coffey Street). The brick buildings are also well-maintained and the sidewalks do not betray the presence of too many people and canines like many others in Brooklyn.
