I took an evening walk on June 23, 2025. That walk led to one New Leaf Journal article titled Happy Cleaners Cargo Trike in Gowanus (comes to you as advertised by the title). I praised the laundromat delivery vehicle in that article for having a nice form-factor. I saw something else with a nice form factor in a different section of my walk: A free white desk.

A small white computer desk neatly placed on a sidewalk with its side against a concrete ledge and its back against a black iron fence at the corner of Love Lane and College Place in Brooklyn Heights. Behind the fence we seen neatly collapsed cardboard boxes ready for recycling.

I encountered this desk in Brooklyn Heights on Love Lane (between Hicks and Henry Streets) and College Place (I previously used a College Place photo to illustrate my December 2024 month-end review). Regular readers will know that I have an affinity for free desks, having covered one back in 2020 on Hamilton Avenue in Columbia Street Waterfront District and three free desks in Carroll Gardens and Columbia Waterfront in a more recent article. This desk did not have a note like some of the free desks I covered previously, but it was clearly a free desk. While the desk itself is generic, I was impressed with its excellent condition. I would rate its condition like new and hardly used.

I did not take the free desk home with me. While am a proponent of the you take one end, I’ll take the other approach to handling free stuff, I did not have a use-case for this particular free desk. As I plan to discuss in future articles, I have a good selection of desks, and that free desk is far too small to handle two desktop computer monitors and not mobile enough for my liking for laptops. Still, it was a nice little desk, so I like to think it found a good home instead of a dump. Its prospects may have been dimmed by the fact that Love Lane is not the most trafficked street in Brooklyn Heights, nor is College Place the most-trafficked alley, but being in a residential area, it would not have been too heavy a lift for many prospective adopters.
