Beginning with fall 2025, I started establishing seasonal themes at The New Leaf Journal. My fall 2025 and winter and spring 2026 themes were a bit catch-all and arguably under-utilized. But that changes with summer 2026, because I have settled on a clear and distinct topical theme that will not go under-utilized. On July 4, 1776, the United States was – or as some may have said, were – born with the ratification of the Declaration of Independence. Thus, my summer theme will be America’s 250th, and I will be publishing articles throughout the summer in the America 250 spirit. (Note that while I will be publishing many American history articles this summer, I will also publish my regular selection of articles on other, unrelated topics, in the spirit of my anti-niche approach to running a writing website.)

I took this photograph of an American Flag against the backdrop of the Brooklyn Bridge on March 26, 2007, with my Nikon D40 camera. I also used this high school-era photograph in a 2022 Memorial Day article.

While you can expect many new American history articles this summer, I will point readers to an on-point article I published in advance of America’s 245th. In Calvin Coolidge On Why We Celebrate Independence Day, I wrote about the speech that then President Calvin Coolidge delivered on his 54th birthday on July 4, 1926, which happened to coincide with the 150th birthday of the United States of America. Had I thought ahead, perhaps I would have saved that article project for the 250th, but it can now serve as an introduction to our upcoming series.
