I received an email at our New Leaf Journal address purporting to be from a “Service & Operations Manager” at China Registry (name@chinaregistry.org). The email advised me that a company, supposedly Hongmei Ltd, is trying to register four domains including “thenewleafjournal” and ending with .cn. I had a feeling this form email has made the rounds, so I ran a few searches. A website called Safe Communities Portugal published an excellent article about Chinese registrar domain scams. I linked to this article because the text of the email and the company is exactly the same as what I received, with the only differences being the sender, domain keyword, and the first name of the supposed sender. Beyond the obvious scam – why would I care about someone registering .cn versions of The New Leaf Journal?
