From a June 2, 2023 report published by Nintendo Life:

If you’re looking for more ways to use an N64 gamepad on modern systems, don’t worry because the talented team at 8BitDo has got you covered. It has unveiled a ‘Mod Kit’ for the original Nintendo 64 controller … This kit comes with a Hall Effect Joystick to ‘greatly increase the life of the joystick’…

I am a fan of hall effect sticks for how they feel as much as their durability advantages. The Nintendo 64 controller is interesting. I have a favorable view of its multi-purpose design and I love the feel of its unique joystick design. But while its joystick feels great to use and is in some ways superior to most sticks that came after it, it is fragile. I explained how the controller-spinning mini games in the original Mario Party were particularly hard on Nintendo 64 controllers. It was for that reason I ordered a truce on joystick spinning games when I hosted two Mario Party games with three friends back in 2019 (my special edition Hey You Pikachu controller does not deserve to die in Mario Party tug-o-war). Now if we combine 8BitDo’s hall effect mod with gloves, the infamous Mario Party spinning games may finally become playable a quarter-century after the game’s release.
