My favorite movie is Makoto Shinkai’s 2007 classic about love and distance, 5 Centimeters Per Second. There are many reasons that I love 5 Centimeters Per Second, but one of them is Mr. Shinkai’s sublime art direction. While his character design has improved in subsequent movies, the backgrounds and lighting in 5 Centimeters are the best display of Mr. Shinkai’s unmatched aesthetic sensibilities in the area of anime production.
