OpenOffice was the first big name in terms of free and open source alternatives to Microsoft Word and other proprietary office suites. It was frozen in time somewhere around 2014. LibreOffice was then forked from OpenOffice and is actively developed today. OpenOffice received a bigfix release a week or two ago, but otherwise remains frozen in time. It’s FOSS published a comparison and concluded that “LibreOffice is the better choice if you regularly work with documents.” I will put it more simply: “If you are using OpenOffice, stop doing that and use LibreOffice.” With that being said, I recommend writing initial document drafts in markdown, preferably with the excellent Ghostwriter markdown editor (see my review).
